Karl Taylor Wood was started by brothers Joshua and Justin Steunenberg who have a passion to give forgotten and discarded trees a new life as beautiful slabs and pieces of functional, elegant, clean furniture. After seeing all of the trees that were left behind from logging and urban development they desired to take those pieces and give them a second life. They started salvaging logs and trees that other wise would have ended up in the garbage to turn them into unique, one of a kind, beautiful pieces of furniture that become fixtures in any home.

At Karl Taylor we saw our logs for character, not grade. We embrace the knots and imperfections and use them to unlock the inner beauty of the slabs.

Salvage and limiting waste are key principles we at Karl Taylor Wood live by. We take our off-cuts and less desirable slabs and turn them into beautiful spoons, bowls and charcuterie boards.

We mill our logs with a combination of a chainsaw mill and bandsaw mill to maximize the amount of material that can be salvaged.

After the logs are milled we stack and air-dry the live edge slabs before finishing them off in our kiln. We air dry our slabs to try and get the best quality out of our wood and let the natural drying process happen before the drying process is finished off in the kiln. The kiln provides sterilization to the wood as well as it takes the moisture content of the wood down to its final destination.

Once we have dried the slabs we begin our design process. We take care in our designs of ever dining table, coffee table, window sill, shelf, counter top and charcuterie board to maximize the character and functionality. We let the natural beauty of the wood shine in our designs and put it on full display, every knot, hole and curl.

To unlock the beauty of the slabs we plane away the rough surface milled surface of the slab until we get a smooth flat surface to work with. We then begin our design and layout process to find the best possible layout that will let the beauty and uniqueness of each slab shine.

Our goal is to create stunning pieces that fit in any home.
